29 Oct Voyaging Around the State
For the past two months, the UNE Discovery Voyager team have been busy with facilitating STEAM activities in schools, very possibly near you!

We visited large schools and small schools, local and far away. We thought we’d give you a recap of how far afield we’ve travelled and where we’ve visited during August and September. Our thanks to schools in Armidale, Wytaliba, Emmaville, Tintinhull, Walcha, Inverell, Tamworth, Newrybar, Empirevale, Uralla, Bellingen and Woolbrook for inviting us to join you for some exciting science activities. The team also visited schools linked to the Rivers Academy of STEM Excellence in and around Lismore for four days in October. Thank you also to Hernani Public School and Lightning Ridge Central School for visiting our museum and learning about the animals and fossils on display there. Students from Lightning Ridge were able to come face to face with ‘Lightning Claw’ – a dinosaur discovered by UNE palaeontologist, Dr Phil Bell, based on a few bones found by opal miners in their very own town. We love being able to pass on our knowledge and create curiosity with the students.
The team did not rest up in the school holidays, and ran activities for students in vacation care as well as holiday activities in the Armidale Library.
Our most popular activities for these visits were Creative Chemistry, Crime Scene Investigation, Escape the Museum, Plants Poop & Pollinators, Magic of Physics and Palaeontology Puzzles. The activities are interactive with the majority of the session time made up with students being ‘hands on’ with our specimens, equipment, props and games.

Some of the feedback we receive:
“We are very appreciative that UNE Voyager Discovery travel out to deliver their program to our small school setting. Many providers don’t. Thank you for valuing equity in education.”
We sure do value equity in education and are more than happy to travel to any schools within the top half of NSW. For those very far places, we will try to coordinate multiple schools into one trip over a few days.
Please contact us at une-discovery@une.edu.au to enquire about a visit to your school in 2025! We love returning to schools we’ve visited in the past as much as we love visiting schools we’ve never been to.
