14 Jan DIY: Make Your Own Bubble Snake

Blowing bubbles can be a lot of fun- and can teach us quite a bit about the properties of liquids. This is a fun activity you can do indoors to beat the heat, or outside if you want to get messy!
You will need:
- Bubble mix (you can make your own using ½ cup dish soap, 1 ½ cup water, and 2 tsp sugar)
- A plastic bottle
- A sock or piece of cloth (not too thick)
- A rubber band
- (Optional) food colouring
- A large tray, add newspaper underneath if doing this activity indoors
- Mix up or add the bubble solution in a bucket
- Cut off the bottom half of the plastic bottle
- Put the sock over the bottom of the bottle, securing it with a rubber band
- (Optional) Add a few drops of food colouring to the end of the sock
- Dip the sock into the bubble solution and blow into the mouth of the bottle!
Why does this work? Bubbles have a very low surface tension, which means that the tiny molecules that make up the bubble mix can stretch a long way while still remaining connected. This surface tension is what gives bubbles their shape, and allows all the thousands of bubbles in your bubble snake to stick together even as it grows longer and longer!
