Our first term 2025

The UNE Discovery Voyager team have been on the road and visited many schools in the region since our last newsletter.  We’ve already visited 27 schools this year and we’re not slowing down!

So far, our most popular activities this year have been Creative Chemistry, The Magic of Physics, Crime Scene Investigation, Escape the Museum and Plants, Poop & Pollinators. We have also revitalised our Rocking Through Time geology show and it is proving a hit with our young audiences. We think our Discovery Voyager team might be up for an Oscar for their outstanding performances!

Thanks to schools in Inverell, Tamworth, Kingstown, Gwabegar, Wee Waa, Gunnedah, Warialda, Emmaville, Woolbrook, Murwillumbah, Mullumbimby, Newrybar, Empire Vale and Armidale – we’ve loved visiting with you and sharing our love of science. Hopefully we have sparked a little curiosity amongst students and they’ve been inspired to look more closely at the world and the sciences all around us.

We also attended the Minerama Gem and Fossicking Festival held in Glen Innes each year. We set up our pop-up science stall and took lots of interesting fossils, rocks and bones which were all a hit with our visitors. Especially our out of this world meteorite, which weighs ~55kg and is 4.5 billion years old!! We held regular “Ask an Expert” sessions throughout the day where people could bring in their specimen from home and one of our specialist geologists and palaeontologists could provide advice about their find.

During early April, we also took part in the amazing Armidale Autumn Festival hosted by the Armidale Regional Council. It was so much fun having our Discovery Voyager truck in the parade along with our two team members dressed as a koala and a dinosaur! We set up our pop-up science stall in the park along with our mobile Imagination Playground of big blue blocks which were popular with children from the very young to primary ages.

Please email us at une-discovery@une.edu.au if you’d like a visit from the UNE Discovery team this year. We do have some spots left in our calendar especially July-August and later in the year and we would absolutely love to visit you wherever you are in northern NSW.
