Double DIY: Snow Storm in a Jar + Slime Making

This festive season, why not make a snowstorm in a jar. Simply mix a teaspoon of white poster paint with half a cup of water. Add the water to the jar and then top up with clear baby oil. Add glitter (we chose festive red and green) and food colouring if you wish.

Once the liquids have settled into their layers and the oil is clear, it’s time to make it storm. Break up an Alka-Seltzer or soluble aspirin and add the pieces one by one to the jar.

Watch the snow swirl around in the jar.

The reason this works is because oil and water don’t mix. The white paint-and-water mixture forms a layer on the bottom, and the oil floats above it because it is less dense.

When the Alka-Seltzer is added, the bubbles disrupt the layering effect, sending upwellings of the paint-and-water mixture into the clear oil layer, giving the effect of a snow storm – or in our case, a Christmas glitter storm!

We recently joined in the fun at the Creative Street Arts Festival in Armidale for the Halloween craft event. We were so excited to be invited and to share our love of slime making!!!

We thought we’d share the recipe here so you can all try to make it at home. We opted for the non-borax option so it’s less toxic for small people.

What you need:

  • ¼ cup PVA white glue
  • A few drops of food colouring
  • Activator – contact lens solution (containing boric acid)
  • ½ cup of baking soda dissolved in 1 cup of warm water

What to do:

Put your safety glasses on*

  • Pour glue into a plastic bowl
  • Add a couple of drops of food colouring and mix well using a spoon
  • Add 15 ml of baking soda solution
  • Add the activator 1 teaspoon at a time while stirring the glue
  • Keep on adding activator and stirring until the mixture becomes sticky
  • You can start kneading with your hands when the slime is not sticking to the bowl

Your slime is ready when it’s feeling soft and stretchy!
