LEGO Construction Challenge

Welcome to the Term 2 LEGO Challenge – a collaboration between Armidale City Public School, Modern Teaching Aids and UNE Discovery.

What’s it all about?

Using LEGO you have at home or in the classroom, create a build that reflects one of these themes:

  • Microbiology
  • Biodiversity
  • Bridges (greater than 15cm span)
  • Towers (must be 80cm tall that supports a tennis ball or 120cm tall that supports a ping pong ball)

 

Who can enter?

Anyone in Kindergarten to Year 8 can enter the challenge.

 

When will the competition run?

The challenge will run from 12pm on Tuesday the 19th May, 2020, to 12pm on Friday the 5th of June , 2020. Entries based around any of the above themes can be entered during this time.

What prizes can I win?

Kindergarten to Year 2 category

  • First prize: LEGO set and $30 voucher for Armidale store Ultramac
  • Second prize: LEGO set and $20 voucher for Armidale store The Reader’s Companion.

Year 3 to Year 6 category

  • First prize: LEGO set and $30 voucher for Armidale store Ultramac
  • Second prize: LEGO set and $20 voucher at Armidale store Reader’s Companion

Year 7 and 8 category:

  • First prize: LEGO set and $30 voucher for Armidale store Ultramac
  • Second prize: LEGO set and $20 voucher at Armidale store The Reader’s Companion

Class prize, where a class is no less than 60% of individuals in that class:

  • A class set of 3 SPIKE Prime LEGO Education robots and accessories. Donated by Modern Teaching Aids.

How can I submit my entry?

Simply take a photo of your build and follow the instructions on the submission buttons below to enter your creation!

Individuals can submit their builds for the opportunity to win the prizes outlined above, while teachers can enter a collation of their students individual builds for the opportunity to win the class prize.

Frequently asked questions

If I have entered as part of my class, can I still enter as an individual?

Yes, you can definitely enter as an individual. Class entries are made up of compiled individual entries.

How many times can I enter?

You can enter the challenge as many times as you like! As long as each build reflects one of the four themes, and each entry is one individual photo of your build, entries are unlimited.

Is there a minimum or maximum number of Lego pieces I can use?

No, there is no minimum or maximum number of LEGO pieces you can use towards your build. Create to your heart’s desire!

Can I make my entry with a friend?

Yes, you can definitely make an entry with a friend. This will be counted as one individual entry – but you can still share the prize if you win!

Is Duplo allowed as part of Lego or do we only use the smaller pieces?

No, only classic lego blocks are allowed in the challenge.

Do we have to follow the instructions that come with the Lego or can we make our ‘own’ thing?

We encourage you to create your own build. Remember these must reflect one of the four themes! Your builds will be judged on originality.

How many times can I enter?

You can enter the challenge as many times as you like! As long as each build reflects one of the four themes, and each entry is one individual photo of your build, entries are unlimited.

Does my build have to be a certain size?

There are no limits on size – make your build as small or as big as you like!

Does my build have to be accompanied by a blurb?

Yes, builds are to be accompanied by a short blurb describing your creation. These are to be a maximum of 50 words for years K-2, 100 words for 3-6 and 150 words for 7-8.

Is there a maximum file size my photo submission can be?

Maximum file size is allowed 64MB.

What file types are supported for my submission?

Supported file types are .jpg, .png, and PDF.

Who can enter a class submission?

Only teachers or educational leaders can enter a class submission on students’ behalf.

Do I have to be from a certain part of Australia to enter?

No, entries are open to anyone in the specified age group Australia wide.

Can class entries be made of builds created by groups of people?

Class entries are made of a collation of individual entries. Students can work together to create individual entries, although this will be counted as one entry. Due to the current nature of the school environment, classes cannot create just one build and submit it as a class entry.

How many individual builds do I need as a teacher to make a class entry?

Class entries must be made up of 60% of the class total through individual entries. For example, if you have a class of 30, you will need to submit 18 individual builds.

Terms and conditions

These are the Terms and Conditions for the UNE Discovery, Armidale City Public School and Modern Teaching Aids LEGO competition. These Terms and Conditions comply with and fall under the laws of New South Wales, Australia.

Eligibility

  1. The LEGO competition aims for broad engagement by students in all schools across Australia from Kindergarten and Year 8.
  2. Students are to build independently, whether it be at school or at home, and their individual entry can also be a part of a class submission.
  3. Only single photographs of each build will be eligible for judging.
  4. Teachers and/or parents are able to help with logistics and practical elements where required, but not contribute to the design, story or build of the entry.
  5. Individual entries are eligible to be collated by a teacher/facilitator towards a CLASS entry that is eligible to win a separate prize to the individual builds. This is at the jurisdiction of the teacher making the class entry. For example, students in a class may choose to enter individual entries. It is then the responsibility of the teacher to collate his/her students’ individual entries to put towards the class entry.
    1. A “class” is defined as no less than 60% of the individuals that makes up that class.
    2. Each class submission will be made up of the single photo of individual student builds.
    3. Where classes are smaller than 10 students, the entry must comprise at least 6 students’ individual builds.
    4. A “class” may encompass students across multiple year levels and age groups but must be the students’ class of regular attendance. For example, small schools may have one with students from Kindergarten through to year 3 – this would be considered as one class.
  6. As the participant is under the age of 18 years, they are required to obtain their parent’s or guardian’s permission to enter and agree to these terms and will be deemed to have obtained such permission by submitting an entry.

Entry Submission

  1. The competition will reflect the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) acronym. Competition entries must show a focus on one of FOUR specific themes of the competition:
    1. Microorganisms
    2. Biodiversity
    3. Bridges (of greater than 15cm span)
    4. Towers (80cm tall to support a tennis ball OR 120cm tall to support a ping pong ball)
  2. Multiple entries by a single individual are permitted.
  3. Entries of LEGO builds for judging can be submitted by individuals or by class teachers in one of THREE age/year level categories:
    1. Students in Kindergarten to Year 2
    2. Students in Year 3 to Year 6
    3. Students in Years 7 and 8
  4. Submission by individuals and classes can be via the online portal https://www.unediscoveryvoyager.org.au/lego-competition-2020/ or by emailing files to une-discovery@une.edu.au.
  5. Entries are to consist of ONE (1) photograph showcasing an individual build, as well as a short STORY accompanying the photography.
    1. Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are required to submit up to 50 words for their story
    2. Students in Year 3 to 6 are required to submit up to 100 words for their story
    3. Students in Years 7 and 8 are required to submit up to 150 words for their story.
  6. Acceptable photograph formats for submission include png, jpg and PDF
  7. Discretion as to whether or not an entry complies with the theme rests exclusively with the competition judges.
  8. Satire, commentary, parody, and humour are welcome but any entry deemed by the judges to be abusive, offensive, obscene, discriminatory, or derogatory will be ruled ineligible. All entries ruled ineligible will be immediately deleted from any public space.
  9. By submitting an entry, you warrant that the entry is the original, unpublished work of the entrant(s) nominated in the submission.
  10. Entries can be submitted at any time during the competition via:
    1. the online portal on the UNE Discovery Voyager website (address stated above), OR
    2. email of photographs and accompanying stories to une-discovery@une.edu.au stating the entrant’s name, year level, address, phone number, and the category of the entry.
  11. Any entry received after the deadline 5th June 2020 will be deemed invalid.
  12. UNE reserves the right to verify the validity of all entries and to disqualify any entry which, in the opinion of UNE, fails to comply with these terms and conditions, contains objectionable content or infringes copyright
  13. The University of New England warrants that the owners of any entries published in the above ways will be credited and acknowledged as such. This credit will include the name(s) of the participant.
  1. UNE collects personal information such as name, age and email address about entrants to enable them to participate in the competition and for the purpose of carrying out the competition. Any requests to access, update or correct information should be made to UNE.
  2. Participants agree to the publishing and disclosure of their entries, personal information (for the purposes of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW)), including their name and image in any marketing or other publications associated with the competition, UNE or the exhibition in any format, including but not limited to video footage, audio recordings, photographic images, written material or testimonial statements.
  1. UNE will not be will not be liable for any personal injury, loss, damage or expenses (whether direct or consequential) to persons or property arising out of or otherwise connected with this competition or entry into this competition.

The competition will commence on Tuesday the 12th May, 2020 at 12pm, and entries close on Friday 5th June 2020, at 12pm. Entries for the competition, both individual and class, may be submitted at any time during this period.

Participant Rights and Ownership

  1. Entrants retain ownership of and all rights to their entries. As a condition of entry, the University of New England reserves a royalty-free, non-exclusive right to:
    1. Use of photographs of entries to promote future UNE Discovery competitions.
    2. Publish any entry on University of New England or UNE Discovery websites.
    3. Publish any entry in University of New England or UNE Discovery internal and external communications.
    4. Keep the files submitted, and to archive the images on CD or in other electronic forms, so that entries can be used for these purposes.
  2. The University of New England warrants that the owners of any entries published in the above ways will be credited and acknowledged as such. This credit will include the name(s) and, where applicable, contact details of the entry’s owner(s).

Judging and Judging Criteria

  1. The judging criteria will be made available upon announcement of the competition.
  2. Competition judges comprise of representatives from UNE Discovery and Armidale City Public School.
  3. Individual submissions of single photographs and accompany story will be judged across FIVE categories on a 20 point sliding scale per category.
  4. The winner in each individual category will be the entry with the highest overall score.
  5. The winner in the class submission category will be the class with and highest average overall score.
  6. Judges may not enter the competition in which they are appointed to be judges.
  7. The competition judges’ decisions are final, and no correspondence nor discussion will be entered into regarding the judging process or the outcomes reached.
